Digital-to-Analogue Converters (DACs)
Digital-to-analogue converters (DACs) convert digital audio into an analogue signal. A DAC can be purchased as a standalone component or found inside modern CD/SACD players, streamers and high-end Blu-ray players. A quality DAC does more than convert a signal: it can also improve sound quality. For TV audio through a basic stereo system, an entry-level model may be sufficient. To get more from your favourite recordings, consider more advanced models. Do not overlook the digital cable that carries the signal to the DAC, or the analogue RCA/XLR cable that connects it to the amplifier.

Matching a DAC to your source
The DAC needs an input suitable for your computer, TV or player and an output compatible with the amplifier. Check format support for each input, as USB and optical capabilities may differ. For a direct connection to active speakers, check volume control. Headphone outputs and preamplifier functions are not included on every DAC.
